Pricing, contracts, billing, and renewals accounted for 45 of 105 negative observations, or 42.9%, more than any other friction category in our sample.
So the comparison below looks beyond feature lists to the issues that usually matter once the software is actually in use: cost, integrations, workflow flexibility, implementation, support, and how difficult it is to change course later.

McLeod holds a 4.1 rating from 42 G2 reviews and cites more than 900 truckload companies running the platform.

The pattern isn’t “McLeod is expensive,” it’s deep capability paired with a long implementation and a dated interface.
Choose it if: you’re a large carrier or brokerage that needs accounting depth over modern UI.

For freight forwarders, CargoWise is the stronger fit for complex international operations that need forwarding, customs, compliance, and multi-entity workflows in one platform. Magaya and GoFreight suit smaller or mid-sized forwarders that want a simpler rollout and less operational complexity.

CargoWise, owned by WiseTech Global, moved roughly 95% of customers to Value Packs on December 1, 2025. WiseTech CEO Zubin Appoo called it “not a pricing change, but a totally different commercial model,” per the Journal of Commerce.
What practitioners reported: in our audited sample (n=36), 32 observations were negative. Commercial friction accounted for 19 of those 32 negatives (59.4%), heavily concentrated in the months after the Value Pack rollout, so this figure is shaped by that single pricing event rather than steady-state sentiment.
Choose it if: you run multinational, multi-entity forwarding and need deep customs functionality.
Skip it if: you’re a smaller regional forwarder; Magaya or GoFreight likely fit better.

Pricing is quote-based, and GoFreight has a shorter market track record. Our audited sample had too few observations on either for a sentiment signal.
For logistics fleet management, Motive is a strong fit for ELD compliance, driver safety, and fleet monitoring, while Samsara suits larger operations that want telematics, maintenance, safety, and integrations in one platform. For logistics visibility, project44 fits shippers and 3PLs needing multi-carrier tracking and exception management, FourKites suits larger enterprise networks, and Descartes MacroPoint works well for carrier tracking alongside an existing TMS.

project44 built its reputation on real-time visibility, but that’s no longer the whole product. In August 2025 it launched Intelligent TMS, built on its Movement platform, covering procurement, planning, execution, freight audit, and visibility together. It now positions Intelligent TMS as a complete TMS and system of record, or as a layer alongside an existing SAP TM or Oracle OTM deployment, and it entered IDC’s 2026 TMS MarketScape as part of that expansion, with the company reporting over 150 Intelligent TMS customers and $30 million-plus in ARR (vendor-reported, not independently verified).
What practitioners reported: our audited sample was too small (n=5) for a reliable sentiment conclusion; treat the positioning above as current, verified product scope rather than a verdict on experience at scale.
Choose it if: you want visibility today with the option to add TMS functionality without a second vendor.
Skip it if: you need a TMS with a long, proven track record; project44’s TMS product is newer than McLeod’s or CargoWise’s.
What to test: ask specifically which Intelligent TMS modules are production-proven at your transaction volume versus recently launched.
Secondary visibility options: FourKites tracks over 2.5 million shipments daily and extends visibility into yard and warehouse operations for enterprise shippers; pricing is quote-based, scaling with volume. Descartes MacroPoint layers carrier tracking onto an existing TMS rather than replacing it, priced by subscription or per-load, with third-party trackers citing figures as low as $5/load at volume. Neither had enough audited observations for a sentiment conclusion; MacroPoint’s visibility quality depends on carrier tracking-compliance rates, which vary by lane.
SAP Transportation Management, Oracle Transportation Management, Blue Yonder, and Manhattan Associates compete for the same buyer profile: a large shipper or manufacturer running transportation as part of a broader ERP or supply-chain stack, not a standalone TMS.
All four price by custom enterprise quote with no public list price. Selection logic is ecosystem fit, not feature comparison: choose SAP TM if you already run SAP, Oracle OTM if you run Oracle Fusion or E-Business Suite, Manhattan if you want transportation unified with warehouse management on one platform, and Blue Yonder if you need transportation tied to broader supply-chain optimization.
Independent analysis puts Blue Yonder’s per-module cost from roughly $100,000 annually, with deployments commonly running 12-24 months and professional-services costs that can match the first year’s license fee. Our practitioner sample lacked enough public observations on any of the four for a sentiment verdict, common at this quote-only tier since these buyers post far less publicly than SMB software users do.
Choose one of these if: you’re already running the vendor’s broader ERP or planning suite and want transportation natively integrated, or you need transportation unified with WMS at enterprise scale.
Skip all four if: you need transportation management without a 12-24 month deployment and seven-figure total cost; a standalone TMS will fit faster.

For ecommerce logistics, ShipStation is a strong fit for brands managing parcel shipping, marketplace orders, labels, tracking, and carrier rates in one place. It works best for DTC and ecommerce teams focused on parcel fulfillment rather than freight-heavy transportation workflows.

ShipStation moved from an eight-tier model to three volume-based plans in mid-2025 and connects through 400+ integrations, including 200+ global parcel carriers and 50+ LTL carriers.
What practitioners reported: of 11 audited observations, all 11 were negative, with commercial issues (tier changes, added fees, billing) accounting for 6 of them. This is a small, negatively-skewed sample by design, since the research specifically searched for friction; it shouldn’t be read as universal dissatisfaction.
Choose it if: you’re an ecommerce brand needing parcel shipping and marketplace consolidation.
Skip it if: you ship meaningful freight volume alongside parcel; you’ll need a TMS in addition.
What to test: model your cost at your actual monthly shipment volume, since tier boundaries move the bill more than any single feature.
Descartes CustomsInfo is the strongest standalone option: AI-enabled HS/HTS classification, landed-cost, and denied-party screening covering 190+ countries, priced by custom quote and tied to modules and transaction volume, feeding directly into SAP and Oracle ERP systems.
It doesn’t replace forwarding execution, so it suits importers, exporters, and brokers wanting compliance depth without switching platforms. CargoWise and Magaya, covered above, both build customs functionality natively into a broader platform, a better fit if you’d rather not run a separate compliance tool. Our audited sample had too few observations on CustomsInfo for a sentiment conclusion.
Pricing, contracts, and renewal terms were the largest single category of negative sentiment in the full audited sample, ahead of core product limitations.

Of the 105 negative observations, 45 (42.9%) involved commercial friction, meaning pricing, billing, contracts, or renewal terms specifically. Only 34 (32.4%) were primarily about core product limitations; the remaining 71 (67.6%) concerned something beyond the product itself, including support, implementation, integration, and adoption. This doesn’t mean 42.9% of all logistics-software customers have pricing problems; it means that among the negative observations we collected and coded, commercial issues were the most common primary cause.
Because CargoWise’s Value Pack rollout generated a concentrated cluster of pricing complaints, we reran the analysis excluding those 10 observations. Commercial friction still led at 36.8%, against 35.8% for product issues, a gap of roughly one percentage point. Commercial friction was the largest category in the full sample, and it held that position even after removing the year’s single biggest pricing event, which is more meaningful than the headline 42.9% figure alone.
A second, multi-label analysis looked at specific themes inside negative observations (one observation can mention more than one, so these don’t sum to 100%): pricing (34.3%), usability (15.2%), support (14.3%), reliability/performance (11.4%), workflow/exception handling (11.4%), switching/migration (10.5%), billing (8.6%), renewal (7.6%), contract terms (6.7%), training/onboarding (6.7%), integrations/API/EDI (5.7%), and data export/reporting (4.8%). Pricing dominates, but operational concerns fragment across several smaller categories, which is why fixing “the pricing problem” alone wouldn’t resolve most of what shows up here.
Lifecycle data reinforces the pattern: 94 of 105 negative observations (89.5%) occurred after selection, concentrated in ongoing operation (61%) and renewal (11.4%). Read this as a characteristic of a dataset built by searching for post-purchase friction, not an industry-wide failure rate.
WiseTech’s shift from seat-and-transaction pricing to per-transaction Value Packs, effective December 1, 2025, is the clearest example in our research of why pricing architecture deserves scrutiny before signing, not after. The Loadstar described “unprecedented user unrest” among forwarders, per GoFreight’s summary of industry coverage, and practitioners reported cost increases in the 20% to 50% range.
That impact varied by account and transaction mix rather than applying uniformly; some reported increases around 45-50%, but this wasn’t universal. The Freight & Trade Alliance has since negotiated a Transitional Pricing Protection mechanism with WiseTech for affected members, calculated as the difference between the old and new pricing and applied monthly as a credit or debit.
This isn’t an anti-CargoWise finding, it’s a buying lesson that generalizes across the market: know what your bill is indexed to (seats, transactions, revenue, modules) before evaluating the sticker price, and model your actual usage against the current pricing structure rather than a legacy quote. The same discipline applies to Motive’s per-vehicle contracts and Onfleet’s tiered task pricing above.
When teams still build workarounds. At least five observations in our audited sample described teams building workarounds outside their platform: custom PDF-extraction scripts, manual CSV exports to accounting software, and side reporting tools. If a team is still exporting to spreadsheets after implementation, the platform’s reporting or integration layer didn’t cover a workflow the team actually runs.
Where exception handling breaks. At least eight observations described friction from non-standard workflows: editing a shipment after dispatch, one-off customs parties, broken carrier tracking, unusual package dimensions, irregular route schedules, and connectivity gaps in the field. Exception handling appeared across TMS, forwarding, and fleet categories alike, which is why demos should test abnormal workflows rather than only the vendor’s ideal happy path, the direct lead-in to the tests below.
Descartes’ 10th Annual Global Transportation Management Benchmark Survey found that only 19% of shippers and 15% of logistics service providers report using AI at scale. Data quality is the leading barrier, cited by 33% of shippers and 45% of LSPs, followed closely by integration complexity at 39% and 38%, respectively. Separately, a Gartner survey of 140 senior supply chain leaders at companies with $250 million or more in revenue found 56% cite integrating AI with legacy systems as a major challenge, and 50% lack the internal talent to implement and manage it. Gartner’s Snigdha Dewal noted that “the greatest friction point in scaling AI today isn’t the technology itself.”
Read alongside our practitioner findings, the evidence suggests that data quality, integration complexity, and workflow readiness are among the largest constraints on scaling AI in logistics, so buyers should evaluate the operational environment around the model as closely as the AI capability itself. During a demo, ask a vendor to separate what’s genuinely happening under an “AI-powered” label: rules-based automation, calculated optimization, or an agent taking action with some autonomy, since these carry very different reliability requirements.

Off-the-shelf logistics software works well when your operation fits the workflows the platform was built around. The case for custom software becomes stronger when important processes still require manual work, disconnected systems, or repeated workarounds.
